Leptin: a link with overweight recognized

Leptin is a hormone or quasi-hormone that is secreted by fat tissue. It serves primarily to regulate our metabolism: when we fail, we tend to do more stored fat and eat more. It is therefore easy to understand that research are frequent on the ability to manipulate leptin to fight against the overweight? More astonishing is that this study examines the relationship between leptin and Alzheimer’s disease.

A link between leptin and Alzheimer’s disease

It seems that in addition to its role in regulating weight and appetite, leptin also plays on the development and brain evolution. Researchers have discovered that leptin reduces levels of beta-amyloid, the main component of plaques that develop in the brains of people affected by Alzheimer’s disease. And a recent study indicates that people who have low levels of leptin in the blood have long-term four times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those who have the highest importance. This influence is independent of abdominal obesity, which increases the risk of dementia and is associated with low levels of leptin.

Leptin to treat Alzheimer’s?
